HDCN Selected Basic Science Sites

(Revised 3/04/97)

Searchable On-Line Electronic Journals

APStracts. This site is from the American Physiological Society. It is a searchable compilation of all of the abstracts that will be published in one of the APS journals in the next 4 months. Go to http://www.uth.tmc.edu:- 80/apstracts/.

Journal of Biological Chemistry (on-line version) From the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Most usable feature is asearchable index of all recent articles. Also Tables of Contents of upcoming issues. Go to http://www-jbc.stanford.edu/jbc/.

Journal of Clinical Investigation Includes tables of contents and abstracts; full articles are promised. At the Rockefeller press site you can also find the Journal of General Physiology and Journal of Cell Biology

Journal of Immunology Including the Cutting Edge electronic rapid communications journal, at http://journals.at-home.com/JI/. Also, the American Association of Immunologists Home Page has a number of valuable links, including sources for Molecular Biology tools, a link to the NIH CRISP database (read your competitor's grants), etc. The address is http://glamdring.ucsd.edu/others/aai.

SCIENCE
Tables of contents, News and Views, and a searchable author index with selected summaries and abstracts are offered.

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION's "Journals at Home" page
This new site offers tables of contents and abstracts of current issues of the following AHA journals: (Click on the main site for the current issue of each of these journals, or click on each individual journal title for an index by volume and number) "Hypertension","Stroke", "Circulation", "Circulation Research", and "Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology".

Other Electronic Basic Science Journals. See the short list on HDCN's home page. For more detailed lists, look at the listing at http://www.edoc.com/ejournal/academic.html or simply try http://www.edoc.com/ejournal/ for a list of all sorts of interesting electronic journals, from University newsletters, to various newspapers in countries all over the world. Another excellent list of medical electronic journals and newsletters is at Emory University's Medweb site.

NEJM Full Text Articles on Molecular Medicine. A collection of 27 selected articles and several letters pertaining to molecular medicine published in the New England Journal of Medicine since January of 1994. The full text of each article, complete with figures and tables, is included. Together these papers form a wonderful internet resource equivalent to an up to date textbook on molecular medicine for the practicing physician.

Selected Basic Science Nephrology Sites

Kidney Development Database. Maintained by Dr. Jamie Davis, this site lists references pertaining to research on the metanephros, mesonephros and pronephros. Data are presented in table form by topic area. Also listed are animal mutants useful in the field, a master index of genes, and e-mail addresses of researchers in kidney development.

Search the NIH Research Grant Database

This is done by connecting to the NIH CRISP gopher. You simply put in a key word or investigator name, and all grants, including abstracts, that fulfill these criteria will be retrieved.

Search the molecular biology subset of MEDLINE via ENTREZ

The Entrez Browser is provided by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Searches are free of charge. In addition to MEDLINE, you can search protein, nucleotide, and 3-D structures databases, and there are separate search tools depending on whether or not you have a forms-capable browser.
