This is another abstract by the Homburg group comparing LDL-apheresis with
lipid lowering drugs in patients with severe hypercholesterolemia using a
controlled trial (whether the trial was truly randomized was not clear).
After a period of 44 months, cholesterol fell 47% in the apheresis group vs.
12% in the drug group. HDL increased by 8% with apheresis, but only by 1%
with drugs, etc. The sample size was too small (24 patients in each group) to
assess any outcome measures.
