The long term results (mean 43 months) of treatment with LDL-apheresis in 30 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia is described. After 1 year of therapy, serum triglycerides were reduced from a mean of 500 to 300, cholesterol from 400 to 230, LpA from 28 to 18 mg/dl, with stabilization thereafter. Outcomes cannot be accurately assessed without some control group, but a reduction of nitrate medications and increased "performance" in these patients was claimed. (J. Daugirdas)
