Chromium-51 tagging of erythrocytes was used to assess RBC survival in 18 anemic dialysis patients studied on multiple occasions. Before correction of anemia (Hct 24%) the RBC half-life averaged 24 days. After 12 months of EPO therapy, mean Hct was 33% and RBC half-life had increased to 27 days. More than a year later, after EPO was stopped for non-medical reasons (?availability), RBC half-life in 15 of the patients had fallen back to a mean of 22 days.

Comment: I would like to see a population analysis to determine whether this observation of increased longevity might be a mathematical consequence of an increased "birth rate", without a true increase in longevity per se. (J. Daugirdas)
