Hemodialysis patients with complete correction of renal anemia by rhEPO: Polyamines

In uremic patients, certain polyamines, notable spermine and spermidine, inhibit erythropoiesis. When dialysis patients were divided into groups of 10 based on Hct levels, those most anemic were found to have the highest plasma levels of polyamines. Polyamine levels ranged from 2.28 umol/L in those with Hgb < 8.5 g/dl to 0.65 in patients with Hgb < 13 g/dl. Control levels were 0.32. Spermine was the main polyamine elevated in the plasma, whereas spermidine was increased in RBCs. To what extent the increased polyamine levels were the cause of the lower Hgb vs. the effect of anemia was not clear (to this reviewer). (J. Daugirdas)
