573 patients recieved IV iron over 2 years. The incidence of adverse
reactions was low (4.7%). Serious reactions only occurred after 0.7%
of administrations with no deaths. However, one cardiac arrest did
occur during administration of the initial test dose. Most common
adverse reaction manifestations were pruritus, dyspnea, flushing and
hot flashes, chest pain, and nausea. A history of drug allergies
increased the patients' risk of a reaction.
Comment: Overall, these data suggest that use of IV iron in
hemodialysis patients is safe. These data can be used as a reference
for hospital and public health officials.
