Bone strontium levels are increased in dialysis patients with osteomalacia

Nephrol Dial Transplant (Jun) 11:A42 1996

In this collaborative study trace metal analyses were performed in 100 bone biopsies. The bone concentration of strontium was selectively increased in patients with osteomalacia. Indeed strontium levels were 2 times higher in patients with osteomalacia than in those with hyperparathyroid bone disease, adynamic or mixed lesion, or normal histology. Interestingly in patients with osteomalacia bone strontium was directly related with Al and Ca concentrations.

Comment: Osteomalacia is associated with markedly raised bone strontium. It remains to be seen if strontium accumulation has a pathogenetic role in osteomalacia in these patients (Carmine Zoccali, M.D., Reggio Calabria, Italy).
