Renagel (cross linked polyallilamine Hcl) is a non-absorbable
phosphate binding polymer free of calcium and aluminium. This pilot
study in 36 patients examined the efficacy of Renagel in lowering
serum phosphate.
Renagel (average dose 3.5 g/day) caused a
20% reduction in serum phosphate while no such change was found in a
control study (placebo). Interestingly Renagel also reduced (-20
mg/dl) serum Cholesterol and LDL Cholesterol and did not modify serum
calcium.
Comment: Renagel appears a promising drug
and if these results will be confirmed in larger trials it may
solve the problem of effectively reducing serum phosphate whitout
inducing hypercalcemia in dialysis patients (Carmine Zoccali,
M.D., Reggio Calabria, Italy).
